Talking Times Carries on
Before the current corona virus emergency, teams of volunteers used to meet up weekly to produce the Fakenham, Dereham and Wells Talking Times. Items from local papers were recorded together with a magazine section of stories, quizzes and other articles, and these were distributed, on digital media, to the blind and poorly sighted of the area.
Current restrictions on group meetings threatened to suspend publication of the Talking Times, but with isolation and the resultant loneliness, being one of the negative aspects of this time, the committee felt they should do all they could to continue publishing. They were fortunate that two of the volunteers were able to set up a recording hub at their home and continue production there.
Other team members were able to contribute to the operation using the Internet to deliver their items for inclusion in the week’s issue. Local news suppliers were able to help by providing copy digitally and Royal Mail, as usual, delivered the memory sticks free of charge. Providing the postal service continues to operate, and our team stays well, then the Talking Times should continue to go out to those needing it.
